It’s been beautiful in Colorado and most mornings and evenings my nose is tucked between the pages of a page or I’m scrolling down the screen as I devour the words printed on the NetGalley app. This month, I’ve been stretched, edified, encouraged–at times, dismayed–and delighted by the books I’ve listed below.

If any of them appeal to you just click the appropriate image.

I’d love to know more about the books you are reading.  Is there words that are changing or impacting your life?

Heirloom: Living and Leaving a Legacy of Faith is an inspirational book filled with short stories of those who have impacted the lives and hearts of those around them often in simple, unexpected ways. Each devotional concludes with a suggested scripture reading along with reflective questions and prayer.

Ms. Howard also includes ‘Legacy Tips’, ideas that integrate faith into family life, as well as ‘Genealogy Tips’ to assist the family historian.

I’ve already purchased one copy of this book as a gift and the recipient is looking forward to reading it a second time.

Favorite quote: “The loss of everything can be devastating . . . or it can be life changing. It all depends on a person’s perspective.”

An erudite and well-researched book, Woke Religion: Unmasking the False Gospel of Social Justice by Wes Carpenter provides insight into the current trend toward promoting social justice and its related tenants (i.e. critical race theory) within the Church. While carefully dissecting the theory of neo-Marxism and how it compares to Christianity, Carpenter also invites readers to explore the ways in which “woke” is treated as a religion and how its concepts have been embraced by many Christians.

As someone who believes Christians are meant to look after the needs of the fatherless, the widow, and the foreigner, I found this book edifying and challenging. As much as I desire justice in the lives of hurting people and enjoy supporting social causes, social justice as defined in Woke Religion is not Biblical.

Favorite quote: “One of the most significant reasons why Woke is antithetical to the Gospel is that there is no Christ in the Woke religion. Even when Woke is combined with Christianity, Christ is reduced to a Savior Who cannot save anyone from the sin of perpetual social guilt imputed from the power structures to the oppressive group.”

If you are looking for insights and tips to grow communication and relationship with your child or teen, How to Listen So Your Kids Will Talk: Deepen Your Connection and Strengthen Their Confidence is a great resource.

Author Becky Harling discusses the importance of topics such as nonverbal communication and managing conflict. In addition, she addresses parents across age groups to include those with preschoolers through teens. The short chapters are easy to read and simple to implement.

Favorite quote: “The Scriptures you pray over your kids become blessings in their lives and turn out to be a powerful tool to use in their own prayer lives.”

Leslie McKee’s gently encouraging devotional, Hope Amid the Pain: Hanging On to Positive Expectations When Battling Chronic Pain and Illness, is a book I will read and re-read. Each short devotion weaves story and scripture together and concludes with a reflection question. Space is provided to journal a response.

Ms. McKee addresses such struggles as feeling “less than”, taking fear and worry to the foot of the cross, and learning to grow through suffering.

If you or someone you know deals with chronic pain and illness, I highly recommend this book.

Favorite quote: “People dealing with chronic pain and illness already have a limited energy supply. Don’t waste that energy on lies. Use your energy to build up your faith.”
