Lent, the forty days observed before Easter, commemorate those that preceded the advent of Christ’s ministry–when Jesus “was sent into the wilderness” (Mark 1:12) and tempted by Satan. With the season of “bright sadness” upon us, a term used by the Eastern Orthodox Church, I pondered His desert travels and reflected on His time in the wasteland. The following poem is the result of that meditation.
Like Christ, I pray that we will seek Him when danger surrounds us in our wilderness seasons.
Forty days of solitude
In a dry and thirsty land
Led him into places
Uninhabited by man.
Beasts and Tempter ‘round Him,
The second Adam knew In the barren space Omnipotent grace would reveal Himself anew. Share on XThe second Adam knew
In the barren space
Omnipotent grace
would reveal Himself anew.
Three times evil Incarnate
Appealed to weary flesh.
Yet the Son of God
Overcame deceit
and by angels was refreshed.

Beautiful poem, Tammy! I appreciate this insight, “The second Adam knew in the barren space Omnipotent grace would reveal Himself anew.”
Beautiful poem,Tammy. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, Barbara. Thanks for visiting!
Blessings to you,
Tammy
What a beautiful poem to help us connect our own season of Lent with Jesus’ season in the wilderness. It’s about so much more than giving up chocolate.
Thank you, Leight. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Blessings,
Tammy
I didn’t grow up in a faith tradition that celebrated Lent, so reading about other people’s experiences always fascinates me. All too often we hear about the prosperity gospel, and forget Jesus calls us to give up and follow.
Hi Anita,
I didn’t either, but I’ve begun embracing the traditional fasts as part of my personal walk and study. Lord, forbid that I forget His sacrifice.
Have a great weekend!
Blessings,
Tammy
